Strategic Advisory · Charlie Kim
"I have always been drawn to consequential moments — when the weight of decision is real, when the path forward is not obvious, and when leadership requires both clarity and conviction."

What energizes Charlie Kim is not activity for its own sake, but meaningful progress — the kind that reshapes institutions, unlocks potential, and endures beyond a single cycle. For 35 years at Bain & Company, he advised CEOs, boards, and investors through precisely those moments: industries navigating disruption, technological change, ownership transitions, and large-scale transformation.
He co-founded and helped scale Bain's global Media & Entertainment practice, later serving as Co-Head of the Technology, Media & Telecommunications practice in the Americas. Over his career, he worked closely with more than 50 executive teams and numerous boards across media, technology, and telecommunications, and partnered extensively with private equity sponsors across 100+ diligence and post-acquisition value creation engagements — translating investment theses into executable plans under real operating constraints.
Today
Charlie serves as a board member and independent advisor to C-suite executives — continuing to support leaders navigating consequential change. He is also an active angel investor, working closely with founders building technology-driven businesses through the earliest stages of leadership, strategy, and organizational development.
His work — whether in the boardroom, alongside senior executives, or with founders — is grounded in decades of pattern recognition, but animated by a simple belief: progress becomes possible when clarity, courage, and disciplined execution come together.
Early formation
Long before his professional life, Charlie learned the discipline of performance. Admitted to The Juilliard School at six years old, he trained as a classical violinist and performed publicly from an early age — including as soloist with the New York Philharmonic. Music instilled composure under pressure, preparation without shortcuts, and an appreciation for both precision and interpretation. Those lessons have remained constant.
Governance perspective
Effective governance sits at the intersection of ambition and stewardship. Boards must set direction, oversee risk, and shape leadership — while preserving the clear boundary between oversight and management. Independent judgment, delivered constructively, is essential.
Charlie currently serves as an Independent Board Director of Symmatrics, a Series C cybersecurity company focused on post-quantum cryptography — contributing to strategy, technology oversight, and long-term value creation in an environment where innovation and risk management are inseparable.
"Durable value is built through disciplined choices made at the right altitude."
Expertise
Charlie's advisory sits at the intersection of four domains — built over decades of hands-on client work, not theoretical frameworks.
Technology, Media & Telecom
Deep sector expertise across the full TMT landscape — from Fortune 50 media and telecom enterprises to early-stage technology challengers, across content, distribution, enterprise software, and B2B information services.
Private Equity
Led or advised 100+ diligence and post-acquisition engagements with top global PE and growth equity sponsors. Works closely with sponsors, boards, and management teams on value creation, execution, and exit readiness.
AI & Digital Transformation
Practical experience architecting GenAI strategy, governance, and organizational models — including $1B+ AI-enabled business plans and large-scale AI deployment across enterprise operations.
Large-Scale Transformation
Guides organizations through the hardest kind of change — restructuring, M&A integration, ownership transitions — with a track record of impact spanning cost, growth, and organizational redesign.
Services
Engagements are built around sustained relationships, not deliverable volume. Charlie works with a small number of clients at a time — deeply, not broadly.
Retained Advisory
An ongoing strategic partnership with direct access to senior-level counsel. For CEOs and Boards who want a trusted outside perspective embedded in their most consequential decisions — available when it matters most, not just when engagements are scheduled.
Board Service
Independent board directorship or senior advisory board membership. Brings strategic depth, PE fluency, and management credibility to governance — particularly through moments of transformation, ownership transition, or technological disruption.
Targeted Project Support
High-intensity engagement around specific strategic events — M&A integration, strategic repositioning, leadership transitions, or capital events. Structured for impact, not duration, with seasoned judgment that accelerates and de-risks execution.
Clients
Charlie works with a selective group of clients where the fit is real and the stakes are high. Engagements are not transactional — they are built to last.
C-suite executives & Boards
Companies at genuine inflection points — strategic repositioning, growth acceleration, major operational reinvention, or ownership transition — where leadership wants a seasoned, independent counterpart who tells the truth and stays through the hard part.
PE, growth equity & family offices
Sophisticated private investors seeking deep strategic diligence support, operating partner-level engagement with portfolio companies, or a trusted ongoing advisory relationship across the investment lifecycle — built on 100+ PE diligences across a wide range of industries.
Early-stage founders
As an active angel investor, Charlie works closely with founders building technology-driven businesses — supporting them through the earliest stages of leadership, strategy, and organizational development. Engaging at formative moments keeps him close to emerging innovation.
